Visiting Arizona: The South Rim of the Grand Canyon

By Washington Wandering on July 21, 2015February 11, 2022

There’s nothing like a hike on Bright Angel Train to remind you how out of shape you’ve gotten. We started early in the morning on Tuesday, June 2, at about 7:30. We took the shuttle bus from Yavapai Lodge right to the trailhead. The shuttle at the canyon is really awesome. There are three lines

Visiting Arizona: Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend

By Washington Wandering on June 9, 2015February 11, 2022

This was one of my favorite days of the trip. We left Monument Valley early and drove to Antelope Canyon outside the city of Page. Dad had arranged a special guided tour of the slot canyon. It was specifically for photographers, so they required each individual person have their own DSLR and tripod (neither of

Visiting Arizona: Monument Valley

By Washington Wandering on June 8, 2015February 11, 2022

Last week, my dad and I took a trip to Arizona to visit Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon, and Sedona. We flew in to Phoenix and then drove north, making a few pit stops along the way. Our first stop was at Chilleen’s on 17, a restaurant featured on Bar Rescue that my dad wanted

Visiting Washington DC: Highlights from our recent trips

By Washington Wandering on March 17, 2015February 11, 2022

Last May, my mom moved to DC. She got a new job with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. It was an opportunity she couldn’t turn down, so just a few months after Mike and I moved to Hampton Roads, she relocated three hours north. Mike and I went to visit early in the summer. He’d

Visiting West Virginia: Our Annual Trip to Snowshoe

By Washington Wandering on March 16, 2015February 11, 2022

We took our annual week-long trip to Snowshoe, WV over New Years. There wasn’t any snow on the ground but the slope conditions were pretty good. We stayed somewhere new and had deer visitors every morning. The other people at the hotel would throw food from their balconies and tempting as it was to join

Two Dogs and the season of snow

By Washington Wandering on March 15, 2015February 11, 2022

We got quite a bit of snow this winter – two storms with about 6 inches and several days of minor accumulations.  The pups love their snow days, almost more than I do. During one of the storms, our fancy pine tree got overloaded and one of the branches snapped. Other than that we didn’t

April & Brian’s Wedding in Hendersonville NC

By Washington Wandering on March 14, 2015February 11, 2022

In June, Mike’s cousin (my cousin-in-law?) got married. Their wedding was at a beautiful house in the North Carolina mountains. I was lucky enough to photograph the event. You may remember April and Brian – I took their engagement photos, too. You can view all of the photos here: Post by Aiken Heart Photography.

Visiting Norfolk: Nauticus and the Battleship Wisonsin

By Washington Wandering on August 11, 2014February 11, 2022

On Sunday Mike and I met my Dad to explore the Nauticus Museum and Battleship Wisconsin.  The Battleship is berthed in downtown Norfolk.  We explored the massive ship and also the maritime and naval museums in the adjacent building.  Going anywhere with my Dad is like having a free tour guide – he knows a

1 Year Old

By Washington Wandering on August 4, 2014February 11, 2022

Boomer turns 1 on August 21st.  When I look at him I still see the tiny puppy we brought home in October.  He is my sweet boy and much of his personality remains unchanged, but now he weighs 80lbs and barks with a deep confidence. He is a great dog and brings so much joy

Warm before the storm

By Washington Wandering on March 5, 2014February 11, 2022

Monday the temperature dipped below 20 degrees and the roads were icy and treacherous.  Sunday was a different story.  Less than 24 hours before the deep freeze, Mike and I were walking the dogs under bright, warm, early spring sunshine. We are scheduled to close on our house this Friday and I wanted to visit

I found an old blog post the other day where I’d written, “If you’re happy, show it. If you’re sorry, say it. Feelings aren’t meant to be fought, they’re meant to be felt.” A beautiful January weekend in Western Washington meant taking the time to enjoy this perfect sunshine + mountain + water combination. It’s happening 🥰❄️🥶 Have you see enough photos captioned “Fall in the North Cascades” yet? No? Good because here’s another. 😅🥹💛 Not quite peak but just as pretty! 🧡💛💚 Someone call Owen Wilson I could use a solid “wow” right about now. 😍 Up, up, up we go! Home from our 2025 Marmoteering adventure in @olympic_nps. We hiked in from Obstruction Point on Wednesday afternoon and spent all day Thursday and Friday surveying marmot habitat trying to determine whether certain areas were occupied or abandoned. We were only able to reach two of our three assigned clusters this year because of the challenging off-trail navigation, steep terrain and bear activity we encountered while trying to access the third one. Hopefully one of the later volunteer groups has better luck. But we did see a lot of marmots this year, as well as some abandoned burrows and a TON of mountain beaver activity. And best of all, it didn’t rain a single drop. 😅 We love this little spot along the River 🥰🌲
